How to renovate a small kitchen without losing space
A small kitchen works well when movements and clearances are resolved before cabinets are ordered. Measure appliances, openings and preparation space first. Changing the colour of the units will not solve a dishwasher that blocks the only route through the room.

Check everyday movements on a measured sketch
Place the fridge, sink and hob where they can be used without awkward crossings. Check the open oven and dishwasher, not just closed furniture dimensions. Keeping existing connections can reduce work, but preserving a poor layout purely to avoid moving a pipe may be a false economy.
- Unobstructed passage
- Worktop beside cooking areas
- Drawer and appliance openings
- Extractor route
- Sockets for small appliances
Make storage accessible rather than simply larger
Full-height units use vertical space, while drawers improve access to lower storage. Check corner mechanisms against the usable volume they consume. Under-cabinet lighting helps the worktop; finishes and handles should be easy to clean. Leave maintenance access to valves, traps and appliance connections.
Fix the layout before the trades start
Cabinet drawings, plumbing, electrical points and extraction must use the same dimensions. Confirm appliances and worktop requirements before service positions are closed in. Photograph every wall and list what will stay or change. Check final measurements before manufacturing fitted items; an approximate sketch is for planning only.
